Don’t let blocked gullies flood your property (2024)

Gullies play an important role in our drainage system. Yet many property owners may not even be aware that they are there, and if not properly maintained, a blocked gully can lead to serious flooding problems with the potential for causing damage.

What is a gully?

A gully is like a basin that’s usually positioned under a road with a drain gate sitting above it. Water collects in the gully before joining the main sewage network. To ensure that water can flow freely, it’s important to make sure that gullies are kept clear with regular inspections.

How do gullies get blocked?

When a gully gets blocked, water is prevented from flowing into the sewage network. It backs up, overfilling the gully until it starts to lay on surfaces.

It can cause material damage to the surface as well as to the drainage system.Gullies usually become blocked because of a build-up of leaves, mud, litter or other matter that’s become trapped.

Keeping gullies clean

To return gullies to full working order it’s often necessary to tackle the issue in two ways, but that’s no problem for our lorry-mounted combination unit, equipped with the latest jet washing units.

The first stage is to remove the debris blocking the gully. To do this we can use our powerful vacuum tanker to suck away the blocking material and remove the standing water. Waste that’s removed will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

Once the debris is removed, we use our powerful jet washers to remove any material that remains, such as accumulations of grease.

Regular maintenance can help to prevent the build-up of debris and the return of wet weather in the autumn should act as a timely reminder for property owners to check their drainage systems and avoid the expensive damage that can come with flooding.
