Companies such as Walmart, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A and Target, among many others, will keep their doors open on the federal holiday this year. Costco is one notable exception, as warehouses will be closed on Labor Day.
Labor Day, a federal holiday, celebrates "the social and economic achievements of American workers" and is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday "to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being,"according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, and by 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday on June 28, 1894.

Most Walmart stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Labor Day, a company spokesperson told USA TODAY. However, store hours can vary by location, it is best to reach out to your local Walmart or check theonline store directorybefore heading to the store.
