Why are STAAR Algebra 1 exams curved?
STAAR Algebra 1 exams are curved as an attempt to standardize results for different test administration dates across all the tests ever administered. Variances naturally arise from different cohorts of students, so the Texas Education Agency creates a conversion chart which scales scores to each exam.
You can see this curve when you dig into some of the older exam charts. For example, on the December 2018 STAAR Algebra 1 exam, you needed to score a 34 raw score in order to pass the test. In the two administrations after (May 2019 and June 2019), students only needed to score a 33 to pass.

As we mentioned earlier, to earn a Masters Grade Level score depends on the specific test you take. Based on the 2020 June exam, you would have had to get 41 questions correct in order to earn the designation of a Masters Grade Level.
How do I earn a Meets Grade Level score on STAAR Algebra 1?
As noted earlier, there are sometimes variances of what it takes to earn a Meets Grade Level performance level. That being said, in the last few years, this has typically taken getting 33 or 34 questions correct.
What happens if you fail a STAAR Algebra 1 test?
Students need to pass STAAR Algebra 1 in order to graduate. If you fail a STAAR Algebra 1 test, you will typically have another opportunity to retake it. There is also a condition in which if you fail the STAAR Algebra 1 test but receive a proficient score on the Texas Success Initiative in Algebra 1, you’d meet the graduation requirement.
In the case where you are in 11th or 12th grade and have failed up two end of course STAAR exams, you will be subject to facing an individual graduation committee that will determine whether or not you can graduate, despite failing the exams.
