A horrific tragedy unfolded on the Harare-Nyamapanda Road, claiming the lives of at least ten people. This devastating head-on collision serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present on our roads. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the fatal accident in Mashonaland East province.
The crash occurred near the Suswe area, specifically at the 185-kilometer mark, between approximately 11:30 AM and midday.
Here's what happened: a Honda Fit, carrying ten individuals and traveling from Mutoko to Kotwa, collided head-on with a haulage truck headed towards Harare. The truck had four people on board.
"All the ten occupants of the Honda Fit died at the scene," stated Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the ZRP national spokesperson. Preliminary investigations indicate that the smaller vehicle may have veered into the opposite lane, leading to the devastating impact. "It is alleged that the Honda Fit encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic leading to the crash," Commissioner Nyathi explained.
Thankfully, the occupants of the haulage truck survived the collision, although their condition was not immediately disclosed by the police.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the ongoing concerns about road safety in Zimbabwe, where traffic accidents continue to be a leading cause of fatalities, especially on major highways. The police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The police are urging all motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during the busy festive travel season.
