What are fade effects and what to use them for?

Fade out effects
Fading out effect can be used to dissolve video information to the static background. In case of matrix switching, one can witness a smooth switch off of a video signal from a certain output.
On the output the visitor may see the video dissolving while the background information appears smoothly. This operation must be performed in real time and usually the transition time may be programmed.
In case of a video processor, the fade out effect refers to the transition form, where the video content of a certain video window smoothly dissolves to the background. This operation must be performed parallel over several monitor screens in real time.
Cross fade effects
Cross fade effect can be used to swap two live video contents in a smooth way. In case of a matrix switcher, the first video content displayed on a certain output does not dissolve to the background but it will be swapped smoothly with the second live video content in a rather elegant way.
Each of the videos must be live during the cross-fade operation without any interrupt or signal glitch. This operation is performed in real time and the transition time may be programmed also.
In case of a video processor, the cross fade means that the video content of a certain video window smoothly changes to the second video window. The background does not appear at any time during this switch. This operation must be performed parallel over several monitor screens and always in real time.
