UCI World Cup Namur: Lucinda Brand's Dominance Continues, Puck Pieterse Fourth in Cyclocross Return
Lucinda Brand (Baloise-Glowi Lions) showcased her prowess in the challenging Namur course, winning the fourth round of the UCI World Cup with an impressive display of strength and endurance.
Brand took the lead during the first lap and maintained her position, finishing 43 seconds ahead of World Cup leader Aniek van Alphen (Seven Racing). Amandine Fouquenet (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) secured third place, one minute behind Brand, after an early lead on the opening lap.
Namur, renowned for its demanding climbs, technical descents, and banked straights, witnessed a display of exceptional skill from Brand, who has dominated the cyclocross season so far.
Inge van der Heijden (Crelan Corendon), the previous day's winner in Kortrijk, started strongly but was quickly surpassed by Fouquenet, who excelled on the steep climb. Célia Gery closely followed, aiming for a French 1-2 finish.
Brand's strategic move to take the lead before the end of the first lap set the tone for her dominance. She maintained a significant lead over Fouquenet and a chasing group that included Pieterse, Van Alphen, and Van der Heijden.
By the third lap, Brand's lead had grown, with Pieterse showing signs of fatigue. Van Alphen, however, moved past the Dutch champion into second place, trailing Brand by 28 seconds.
During the fourth lap, Brand encountered a puncture with a few hundred meters to the pits, but she quickly swapped her Trek for a fresh one, losing only 10 seconds. She maintained a 19-second gap over Van Alphen, showcasing her resilience and stamina.
The relentless climbing in Namur often determines the race's outcome, and Brand's strength proved decisive. Pieterse, who paid for her early efforts, was passed by Fouquenet, who took third place.
As the race progressed, Brand's lead expanded to over 30 seconds over Van Alphen, and she appeared unstoppable on the iconic cyclocross course. She further extended her lead on the final lap, securing another resounding victory.
