Over a million Toyota vehicles are being recalled due to a potentially dangerous backup camera issue. This is a significant safety concern, so let's dive into the details.
Toyota has announced a massive recall affecting over one million vehicles. The problem? A software glitch that can cause the rearview camera to malfunction, potentially putting drivers and others at risk. The rearview camera might not display properly on the infotainment screen if the driver takes certain actions shortly after starting the car.
According to the recall report, the Parking Assist ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is the culprit. The software can cause the rearview image to freeze when reverse is selected within a specific timeframe after starting the car, or the image may not display at the next startup if the car is turned on and then off within a specific time.
Toyota began investigating this issue in April 2024 after receiving reports from Japan. During testing, the automaker discovered a software problem and decided to issue a recall because the vehicles could fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.
The automaker found that if a vehicle is shifted into reverse within 0.7 to 2.6 seconds after ignition, the screen may freeze for up to 1.8 seconds. That's more than enough time for a child or another car to cross the vehicle's reverse path. The inoperative display issue happens when two 23-millisecond camera optical alignment data writing processes occur randomly during the first 12.5 seconds after ignition.
This recall impacts a wide range of Toyota and Lexus models, even including the Subaru Solterra. Here's a list of the affected models:

Toyota is already reaching out to the owners of the affected vehicles. They will be instructed to take their vehicles to a Toyota service center, where a technician will update the Parking Assist ECU software.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the recall aims to fix a potential safety hazard, some might argue about the speed at which the camera freezes and if it is enough to cause an accident. What do you think? Is the brief freeze time a significant risk, or is it a minor inconvenience? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
