What is Load Shedding?
When a generator is under too much demand, the power company decides to shed some of the load. Areas lose electricity for a short period, and then regain power. This repeats in multiple alternating areas until the demand is decreased.
Why Is Load Shedding Beneficial?
Load shedding is a good way to protect the power grid from permanently failing. When a large demand occurs, it serves as a warning to the power company. It tells them to increase the load capacity and efficiency to meet the demand. It also serves as a reminder to consumers that they should use electricity more efficiently. If the utility generator were overloaded, the resulting power loss would be devastating. The utility generator also has limits, just like any generator. If the generator is running in an unstable state, it could be very dangerous. If a utility company generator were to break, it could mean system collapse.
Why is Load Shedding an Issue?
In less developed countries, load shedding can damage the economy. When manufacturing companies lose power for 10 hours or more, it makes it hard to stay afloat without laying off many workers. With decreased production and less jobs, the country’s economy takes a direct hit. Crime also increases from the lack of jobs and dark streets. At that point, restoring power may create more instabilities such as anarchy. Load shedding would affect students quite a bit. Access to computers and lighting to study at night would be impossible. Not to mention the elderly and sick. Without power, many people in hospice and assisted living would struggle.
Electricity is not unlimited. It can be lost at any point for a number of different reasons. Here are a few tips from Energy.gov on how you can save energy.
How to Reduce your Energy Consumption
- Unplug appliances when you are not using them
- Buy energy efficient appliances and electronics
- Buy energy efficient lighting
- Turn off lights when you are not in the room
- Insulate your roof or ceiling
Load shedding ultimately is the last option for a power company to consider. Unfortunately, it is a necessary precaution to take if there is no other option. A couple ways to avoid load shedding is to reduce your energy consumption and consider purchasing a generator. Owning a generator for home backup is the best way to prepare for a load shedding blackout.
