A shocking story has emerged from the historic Michigan Theatre in Jackson, Michigan. Former Executive Director Steve Tucker has revealed a tumultuous chapter in the theater's recent history, leaving many questions and a divided community in its wake.
The Battle for the Michigan Theatre
Tucker, in a recent statement, detailed a power struggle between the management team and the board of directors. He claimed that after a change in the board's composition in 2025, tensions rose over minor operational issues and disputes over seemingly trivial matters. The situation escalated, and Tucker found himself on the receiving end of what he described as a deliberate campaign to make his life at the theater unbearable.
"It became clear that certain board members were determined to replace me as Executive Director, for reasons they never disclosed to me or anyone else," Tucker wrote. He had no intention of retiring and planned to continue for several more years to ensure the theater's stability and prepare a successor.
But here's where it gets controversial: Tucker revealed that he had made comments about possible retirement, frustrated by the board's apparent desire to see him leave. The board, however, maintains that Tucker had expressed his intention to retire in March, and they found it necessary to end his directorship on January 22, 2026.
"The Board's decision was based on governance considerations and alignment with the mission, values, and long-term sustainability of the organization," the board stated.
Tucker, however, disputes this narrative, claiming that he was terminated without prior notice and given a letter on January 22, informing him of his immediate dismissal and instructing him to leave the theater by the end of the day. He described the receipt of this letter as a total surprise and shock.
And this is the part most people miss: Major donors had scheduled a meeting with the board's executive committee to voice their concerns about the theater's direction. However, the board chair advised them shortly before the scheduled meeting that they would not meet with the donor group, suggesting a meeting in February instead.
When Tucker took the helm in 2012, the theater was on the brink of bankruptcy and in danger of closing. He fell in love with the building and its rich history, and under his leadership, the theater underwent a remarkable transformation. With the support of the community and a successful capital campaign, the theater underwent a $6.2 million restoration project, reopening in 2024 as a financially secure and thriving cultural hub.
Tucker expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of community support on social media, with many theater supporters crediting him for the theater's revitalization. However, the recent events have sparked outrage, with many calling for a theater boycott or vowing to withhold support.
"These donors, members, and friends believe in the theatre and its mission. To them, I am grateful. Without them, I truly would have failed. Many have become lifelong friends. I am so fortunate and I wish to say 'thank you' to them," Tucker wrote.
The board, in its earlier statement, claimed it was planning a celebratory event to honor Tucker after his retirement announcement. However, Tucker contends that this statement contains "serious inaccuracies." He revealed that the board had asked him to step aside on December 31, 2025, offering to continue his salary until his official retirement and requesting him to stay on as fund development director beyond March 14, 2026, with reduced hours.
"That offer still stands," the board stated.
Tucker's friend and neighbor, Philip Curtis, described Tucker's dedication to the theater, saying he was always at the theater, seven days a week, giving much of his life to its success. Curtis believes the board's actions will be extremely damaging to the theater unless the situation is rectified, calling it a "huge injustice."
A large group of people, including significant donors, are upset with the board's handling of the situation and are unlikely to continue supporting the theater. The community's ire has been raised, with many questioning the board's decision and the future of the beloved Michigan Theatre.
