Youth gangs in Melbourne are on high alert after a stern warning from Victoria Police, who have vowed to make their lives a living nightmare. But here's where it gets controversial: is this tough approach the solution, or could it push vulnerable youth further into criminal activity?
Following a major crackdown in 2025, law enforcement has ramped up efforts to dismantle these groups, issuing a staggering 4300 charges against suspected members. Among these, nearly 400 charges were for weapon possession, including machetes and firearms—a stark reminder of the dangers these gangs pose to the community. Deputy Commissioner Bob Hill delivered a clear message: "While these gangs may recklessly endanger the lives of Victorians, they will soon understand the relentless determination of Victoria Police. If you involve yourself in such activities, we will ensure your life becomes incredibly difficult."
Beyond confiscating weapons, police are exploring additional measures, such as issuing unlawful association notices to gang members aged 18 and older. The goal? To discourage younger individuals from getting entangled in organized crime. And this is the part most people miss: while the focus is often on the youth, the crackdown also targets older suppliers and distributors, breaking the cycle of criminal influence.
Police data reveals the efficiency of their investigations, with an average of just 17 days to make an arrest in the 48 youth gang-related stabbings reported last year. Firearm offenses are also under the microscope, with 69 gang members charged in 2025. Notably, 70 individuals linked to these gangs are now under firearm prohibition orders, including 18 members of a gang implicated in multiple homicides.
The most prevalent charges in 2025 included car theft (831 cases), aggravated burglaries (601), robberies (421), weapon offenses (394), and assaults (385). In total, 476 alleged gang members were arrested 1,480 times last year. As of January 1st, police are actively monitoring 608 gang members across 34 groups.
"Our disruptive strategy is yielding results," Hill emphasized. "Every day, we arrest and charge gang members for serious crimes. When warnings go unheeded, and violence persists, our track record speaks volumes. Offenders are swiftly identified, removed from the community, and brought to justice."
