Lighting the Way: A Family’s Inspiring Journey with Special Olympics | Claudia & Paola’s Story (2025)

Lighting the Way Series: A Family's Journey with Special Olympics

Claudia Peña's journey with Special Olympics began with her daughter, Paola, but soon became a shared family experience, fostering a deeper understanding of inclusion and resilience. Claudia, a dedicated mother and advocate, has been volunteering with Special Olympics Mexico for over 16 years, and joined the Global Family Leadership Council (GFLC) in 2023, where she serves as a collective voice for families worldwide.

A Family's Fight for Inclusion

Claudia's story began when her daughter Paola was diagnosed with an intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) and epilepsy at the age of six. A few years later, autism was added to her diagnosis. During those challenging years, Claudia spent countless hours visiting therapists, doctors, and psychologists, and searching for a school that could meet Paola's unique needs. However, the options were limited, with many schools too expensive or unable to provide adequate support.

Instead of giving up, Claudia took action. In 2006, she founded a support center to address the lack of educational resources for children with IDD. The center worked closely with families, children, and adolescents, offering training for teachers and in-school support through shadowing services. It was during these efforts that Claudia learned about Special Olympics and the transformative power of its programs.

A Transformative Encounter

After attending a meeting with various organizations, Claudia discovered Special Olympics Mexico and the swimming program it offered. Hearing the stories of Special Olympics athletes, she knew this was a cause she wanted to support. Soon after, Claudia and Paola joined Special Olympics Mexico, and began training for swimming, a summer sport. Claudia witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the program, seeing athletes laugh, play, and connect with each other. She also observed parents sharing advice and supporting one another, creating a judgment-free zone.

Volunteering and Advocacy

Since then, Claudia has become a dedicated volunteer, serving as a GFLC member and participating in the Special Olympics Latin America (SOLA) Family Program since 2016. She has also been actively involved in Special Olympics Health programming, recognizing the importance of health support for individuals with IDD.

Overcoming Health Barriers

Claudia highlights the challenges families face in accessing healthcare for individuals with IDD. These barriers include limited healthcare services, financial constraints, and a lack of understanding among providers. However, through Special Olympics Health initiatives like Family Health Forums and Special Olympics Healthy Athletes®, Claudia has witnessed real change. During a Family Health Forum, she noted the respect and commitment doctors showed to athletes and their families, creating a welcoming and supportive environment.

The Power of Prevention

Claudia emphasizes the importance of preventive health programs, especially for families who struggle with financial resources. She shares a poignant example: "Some families don't have the means to buy eyeglasses or take their children for regular check-ups. They often seek medical attention only in emergencies. When parents age or pass away, adult athletes receive even less attention unless a sibling or relative steps in." This highlights the critical role of preventive health programs in ensuring the well-being of individuals with IDD.

Inclusion Through Participation

Today, Paola is 25 and enjoys bowling with athletes of all abilities. Claudia reflects on the powerful lesson Special Olympics has taught her: participation is inclusion. She believes that Special Olympics has not only empowered Paola but has also brought the family closer together, fostering a sense of community and understanding.

A Family's Impact

Claudia and Paola's journey is a testament to the strength and dedication of families within the Special Olympics movement. Their story serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating the power of community, inclusion, and resilience.
