Imagine giving up a stable career in accounting to chase a dream in the unpredictable world of college basketball. That's precisely the leap of faith Josh Petersen took, and it's a story of relentless dedication that ultimately landed him as an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky. His journey wasn't a straight shot – far from it – and that's what makes it so compelling.
Petersen's story begins at Florida State University, not as a star player, but as the head manager for the women's basketball team from 2008 to 2012. Think about the dedication required: long hours, often thankless tasks, all while most students were enjoying their college experience. But here's the amazing part: during his six years, the Seminoles made five NCAA Tournament appearances. It was during this time that his now wife was an equipment manager at Florida State. He then served as a graduate assistant for two years, further immersing himself in the world of coaching. This experience provided him with invaluable insights and a deep understanding of the game.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that starting as a manager puts you at a disadvantage; that you'll always be seen as 'just the manager'. Petersen shattered that perception.
Following his time at Florida State, Petersen took an assistant coaching position at UNC Asheville, where he spent four seasons and experienced the thrill of reaching the NCAA Tournament twice. From there, he moved to Pittsburgh for another four years as an assistant coach, continuing to hone his skills and expand his network. Before joining the Kentucky Wildcats, he spent two seasons at Miami (FL), where he was part of a staff that guided the Hurricanes to their first-ever Elite Eight appearance. This progressive climb demonstrates his unwavering commitment and ability to contribute to winning programs.
"I have had a little unorthodox path but I have always been surrounded by incredible people and coaches,” Petersen acknowledges. He readily admits that coaching wasn't his initial plan. "I thought I was going to be an accountant. Then I learned that was not my forte. I have an accounting degree but I wanted to coach." This highlights a crucial point: it's never too late to change course and pursue your true passion.
And this is the part most people miss... It wasn't just about the big games and tournament runs. Petersen emphasizes the grind, the humble beginnings of "washing towels or just rebounding for players." He saw his role as a graduate assistant, while working on his Master's degree, as an opportunity to prove his potential. "I grew up in west Texas playing a lot of sports but I was never great at any one sport. But I was a sports junkie.” This passion for sports, combined with his willingness to start from the bottom, fueled his ascent.
Now, at Kentucky, Petersen expresses immense gratitude for the opportunities he's been given and is excited to be part of Coach Kenny Brooks' staff. "There’s no replacing gratitude. Every day I think to myself to be at a place like the University of Kentucky that the basketball gods were born here and I feel like I have to pinch myself daily knowing I am at UK and working for coach Brooks,” Petersen said. “My journey was not the traditional way but I am thankful to be where I am now.” His words resonate with anyone who has dared to dream big and defied expectations.
