Bold takeaway: Germany edged India 3-1 in a hard-fought clash at the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup, turning a tight match into a decisive victory. And this is where the story gets interesting... read on to see how the action unfolded and what it means moving forward.
India faced a 1-3 defeat against Germany in their second fixture of the FIH Junior Women’s World Cup campaign in Santiago on Wednesday.
India’s lone goal came from Hina Bano in the 58th minute. Germany’s scorers were Lena Frerichs (5’), Annika Schönhoff (52’) and Martina Reisenegger (59’).
Germany struck early, converting a penalty stroke in the fifth minute as Frerichs tucked it away. After that jolt, India gradually found rhythm and began creating chances, yet could not discipline their finishing to level the score in the opening quarter.
The intensity stayed high after the break, with India pressing to equalize. Germany earned another penalty stroke late in the second quarter, but Frerichs missed that opportunity, leaving the score at 1-0 at halftime.
India started the second half on the front foot, injecting pace into their attack, but remained unable to convert before the final quarter.
The Germans extended their lead when Schönhoff finished a neat tap-in. With time slipping away, India answered through Bano, who converted from a Penalty Corner. Any hopes of a comeback were then dashed as Reisenegger added a third for Germany, sealing a 3-1 victory.
Looking ahead, India will take on Ireland on December 5.
