How to Write a Wedding Thank You Speech with Examples (2024)

Brides and grooms, you should definitely write a wedding thank you speech. As the hosts of your wedding, it’s a thoughtful touch to say a few words to your guests. But it can be intimidating to think about preparing a speech for your big day.

As a professional wedding vow and speech writer, I’ve created this guide with examples for you to lean on.Follow along to discover the answer to every question you have about how to write a wedding thank you speech that your guests will appreciate.

What should be included within the thank you speech?

Follow a wedding thank you speech outline. I recommend the following structure.

Part 1: Introduction

Start by welcoming guests and literally thanking them for attending your wedding. No need to overthink this section. Simple and to the point is all you need.

Part 2: Describe What This Moment Means to You

Next, transition into detailing what it means to you both to have everyone present for your wedding. What does their support mean to you? Why are you grateful for them during this occasion? How have they been there for you leading up to your wedding?

Part 3: Mention Specific People

Is there anyone who deserves a dedicated mention in your speech? If someone helped to finance the wedding or spent time planning it, this is a nice way to give them credit. If there are too many people to mention or if you're worried about excluding someone, you do not need to mention specific people. Instead, keep this part more inclusive.

Part 4: Detail a Wish for Your Guests

How do you want your guests to enjoy the rest of the wedding? Is there a well-stocked bar or a talented DJ? Use this section within your thank you speech to insert some humor and levity. It’s also a great way to get everyone excited about the rest of the event.

Part 5: The Closing

Just like your introduction, keep the closing short and to the point. You can simply say thank you again and wish everyone a wonderful time.

How long should our thank you speech be?

There will likely be a few people like the maid of honor or best man speaking at your wedding so keep your speech short and concise. Most couples speak for 30 seconds to two minutes.

When do we present our speech?

I recommend reciting your wedding speech after co*cktail hour and before dinner. This is essentially the kickoff to your reception and traditionally when members of the wedding party give their speeches such as the best man, maid of honor, and parents of the couple.

You can speak before any of those speeches begin as a way to welcome guests and set the tone for the wedding party members to follow you.

Do we recite the speech together?

One person in the couple can give the speech on behalf of you both or you can give it together.

If you choose to give your thank you speech as a team, take turns by alternating between paragraphs.

Also, be sure that you can either stand in front of one microphone together or have two microphones so that both of your voices get picked up.

I’m terrified of public speaking. Can I do this?

Yes! You just need to learn some public speaking tips.

Here are my top tips for overcoming your public speaking fear.

  1. Avoid real eye contact with guests. Instead, focus on the top of their heads. To the guests, it will look as if you’re meeting their eyes. But for you, looking at their heads instead of their facial expressions will lessen your nerves.

  2. Don’t attempt to memorize your speech. There’s no need! Instead, print your speech and know it well enough that you can glance up from your paper. Just having notes in hand will give you a greater sense of confidence.

  3. Practice three to six times before your wedding day. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll become.

Wedding Thank You Speech Examples For Brides and Grooms

Thank You Speech Example One

To our closest family and friends, welcome and thank you for being here! We are so blessed to be surrounded by the people who have cheered us on and supported our love story from the very beginning. And now as we enter this next chapter together, we’re so grateful to know you’re part of this moment as well.

We’d especially like to thank our parents and the entire wedding party who have put their love, thoughtfulness, and care into ensuring our wedding day turned out just as we imagined.

Our final wedding day wish is for each of you to enjoy celebrating. So please raise a glass as we toast to you all...we wouldn’t be here without your love and we love you!

Thank You Speech Example Two

My new wife and I would like to welcome you all and thank you for sharing this special occasion with us. As we look around this room, we are overwhelmed by the support and love we feel from each and every one of you.

We’d especially like to thank our parents. To my mom and dad who have not only helped plan my dream wedding but who have helped to make sure I’ve felt nothing but joy and love growing up. And to my new in-laws, Greg and Mandy. You have welcomed me into your family with ease and warmth and I am so excited to officially become part of your family today.

I hope to see you all on the dance floor very shortly! Thank you again. Now let’s celebrate!

Thank You Speech Example Three

Thank you for joining us in this milestone moment. The day would not be nearly as special if you weren’t here to celebrate with us.

When I first met Johnny, I fell in love with his ability to draw people in. And as I stand here today, married to that charismatic and charming man, it’s no surprise that our wedding is filled with so many wonderful people that I’m excited to welcome into my inner circle as well.

Now let’s continue the night in typical Johnny fashion...at the bar, with full glasses, and loud laughter.

Cheers!
