Gate Theatre 2026 Season: Conor McPherson's New Play & Irish Premieres (2025)

Hold on tight, theatre lovers! Dublin's Gate Theatre is gearing up for a 2026 season that promises to be nothing short of spectacular. Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions, thought-provoking narratives, and unforgettable performances. The lineup boasts four major productions, including not one, but two Irish premieres, and the highly anticipated return of a beloved audience favorite.

The curtain rises on February 4th with the Irish premiere of Jonathan Spector's Eureka Day, a Tony Award-winning comedy straight from the US. This isn't your typical school play; it's a sharp, witty, and timely exploration of a progressive school community in Berkeley, California, grappling with a mumps outbreak. Think PTA meetings gone wild, but with a healthy dose of social commentary. The brilliant Philippa Dunne, known for her role in Motherland, stars in this production, directed by Roy Alexander Weise. Previews begin on January 30th, so mark your calendars! But here's where it gets controversial... How far should a community go to protect individual beliefs when public health is at stake? This play promises to spark some heated debates.

Following its smash-hit, sold-out run in 2025, Poor, based on Katriona O'Sullivan’s powerful memoir, makes a triumphant return to the Gate in Spring 2026. Previews begin March 14th. Adapted by the talented Sonya Kelly and directed by Róisín McBrinn, Poor tells the inspiring story of O'Sullivan's journey from poverty in England to achieving academic success in Ireland. This isn’t just a play; it's a testament to resilience, hope, and the transformative power of education. And this is the part most people miss... Poor offers a raw and unflinching look at the systemic inequalities that often hinder individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Gate’s acclaimed production will also be gracing the stage of the Belgrade Theatre in the UK in May, bringing this important story to a wider audience.

May sees a revival of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband, gracing the Gate stage for the first time in twelve years. Directed by Marc Atkinson Borrull, this is a chance to rediscover Wilde's timeless wit and social commentary. First presented by the Gate in 1929, the play delves into the murky world of political corruption, personal integrity, and social intrigue. Wilde's signature sharp dialogue and memorable characters make this a must-see. Is it even possible to have an ideal husband, or is it just a facade crafted by society?

The season culminates in July with the Irish premiere of The Brightening Air, a brand-new play written and directed by the acclaimed Conor McPherson. Described as 'an entrancing tale of fate, family and unseen forces in 1980s Ireland', this Gate Theatre presentation of an Old Vic production opens on July 22nd, with previews from July 17th. Expect a hauntingly beautiful and emotionally resonant experience. But is it really fate, or are we just products of our environment and choices?

Gate Theatre Artistic Director Róisín McBrinn encapsulates the season's spirit perfectly: "We are very excited to welcome audiences, old and new, to the Gate and we look forward to inviting them on journeys that make them laugh, cry, and hopefully see the world a little differently."

And don't forget! The Gate's enchanting adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is currently in previews and officially opens on Friday, November 21st, 2025. You can find out more here: https://gatetheatre.ie/production/a-christmas-carol-2025/
