After tonight here in Nebraska we will have completed a third of the high school football regular season and we’ve got three more broadcasts slated for tonight. Below you’ll find the previews for our three games, the rest of the schedule in Nebraska (maybe a note or two depending on the game), plus the schedule for teams over in eastern Wyoming.
RRN-Scottsbluff Games
Gering at Alliance, 7 pm – Broadcast on KMOR 93.3 FM (KMORfm.com) starts at 6:30 pm
It’s a matchup of Bulldogs and it’s a matchup of 2-0 teams tonight in Alliance as these old rivals square off. Gering has started with wins over Torrington and Mitchell while Alliance has rolled up 100 points in their first two games with wins over Gordon-Rushville and Holdrege.
The focus tonight for Alliance on offense will be the state’s leading rushing through two weeks in sophomore Trini Trejo, who’s totaled 519 yards rushing in two games.
Alliance also plays a sophomore quarterback so youth being served in some key spots for the Alliance offense. That home defense will be tested tonight, coach Stein saying they’ll have to be up to the task tonight in the tackling department when dealing with Gering running back Bo Gable, who’s averaging 118 yards per game on the ground.
Through two games this season for Gering the offense is averaging 44 points, with a week one game at Torrington that was called due to bad weather late in the third quarter.
Gering has a schedule built to win games and if they want to host a playoff game again this year a win tonight on the road at Alliance is a must.
Crete at Scottsbluff, 7 pm – Broadcast on 107.3 The Trail (KHYYfm.com) starts at 6:30 pm
The Scottsbluff Bearcats return home to Bearcat Stadium to play a team they beat a year ago on the road 48-0. So far in wins over Grand Island Northwest and Lincoln Northwest the Scottsbluff defense has seven takeaways and they’ve scored three defensive touchdowns.
Last week’s defensive scores came from Daniel Young, who returned a interception for a score and then ran in a fumble return for a touchdown.
Young also scored on the offensive side last week with a 80 yard touchdown catch on the first play of the game at Lincoln Northwest.
Crete has a first year head coach and they’ve already equaled last year’s one win as they beat Beatrice last week 27-14 after a gut wrenching loss in their opener, 30-27, to Platteview.
When I asked coach Josh Littrell about one area of weakness that needs improved, it could be a trouble spot for the Cardinals tonight.
The Bearcats have been efficient when throwing it this year with Nate Kelley completing 9-14 for 231 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
Chadron at Mitchell, 7 pm – Broadcast on 94.1 The Brand (KNEBfm.com) starting at 6:40 pm
This is looking like our most competitive “Area Game of the Week” so far this season as 1-1 Mitchell, coming off a road loss at Gering, hosts always tough, 2-0 Chadron.
Looking at the visitors tonight, Chadron has wins over Broken Bow (12-6) and Valentine (34-0). The Chadron defense has been stout so far, obviously allowing just the six points.
Offensively for the Cardinals they’ve averaged 143 yards per game on the ground while throwing for 140 yards per game.
Mitchell will be looking to get back in the win column after the 46-14 loss at Gering a week ago. It’s a little bit of a different look this season for teams as they prepare to play Chadron.
The Tigers have kept it fairly balanced themselves on offense this year. Sophomore quarterback James Billingsley has thrown for 226 yards and hasn’t thrown a interception through two games and they’ve had eight different ball carriers the fist couple of weeks where they’re averaging 141 yards per game.
Area Schedule
- Bridgeport at Sandhills Valley – The Bulldogs suffered their first loss last week at DCS, one of the top teams in polls right now in D1. Despite that loss, Bridgeport also still being mentioned as a possible top five team in that class.
- Bayard at Hemingford – After opening with a win over Morrill, Bayard last week was shutout at home by Kimball 50-0. Meanwhile the Bobcats are rolling early at 2-0 and they’re averaging 314 yards per game rushing and they’ve got three kids already with at least 150 yards rushing.
- Kimball at St. Pat’s – Kimball is 2-0 and they’ve got a measuring stick game tonight; Bridgeport beat St. Pat’s in week one 44-28 so we’ll see where Kimball fits in against that same opponent tonight. Luke Berger has 226 yards rushing on the season…St. Pat’s bounced back last week with blowout win over Sutherland.
- Sidney at Holdrege – The Red Raiders have started 2-0 with a pair of shutout wins over Cozad and Minden. Sidney quarterback Alek Doty has combined for 413 yards of total offense through two games.
