Scouting for Water: A Mission to Protect Our Planet

HydroGNSS employs a technique called Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reflectometry. When the GNSS signal reflects off Earth's surface, it undergoes alterations influenced by the physical properties of terrain, ice, oceans, or vegetation. By comparing these altered signals with direct signals from the GNSS satellites, HydroGNSS obtains valuable scientific data on the Earth's water cycle.

The mission consists of two microsatellites, each carrying a GNSS reflectometry instrument, orbiting at an altitude of approximately 550 km and positioned 180 degrees apart. This configuration allows for comprehensive coverage and data collection.

Italy's Earth Observation Constellations: IRIDE's Impact

Alongside HydroGNSS, the launch will also see the deployment of satellites for Italy's national mission, IRIDE. IRIDE is designed to provide public sector services based on data from its Earth observation constellations. Specifically, satellites for its second constellation, Eaglet II, will be launched.

Each satellite in the Eaglet II constellation carries advanced instruments, including a multispectral, high-resolution optical instrument and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) instrument. OHB Italia serves as the prime contractor for these satellites.

Eaglet II is the second of six constellations for IRIDE, with the first, Hawk for Earth Observation (HEO), launched earlier this year. Data from IRIDE satellites will support the creation of maps, monitoring services, and multi-temporal analysis, benefiting Italy's public authorities and civil protection department.

Greece's National Small Satellite Program: A Step Towards Innovation

Additionally, the launch will mark a significant milestone for Greece's National Small Satellite Program. Two high-resolution ICEYE radar satellites, the first of their kind, will be launched under this program.
