DEGREE CLASSIFICATIONS

Classes of degree are to be awarded depending on the cumulative GPA obtained. The classes of degrees that can be awarded are First Class Honours, Second Class Honours (Upper Division), and Second Class Honours (Lower Division), Third Class Honours.

For example, if you got the grades 68, 72 and 79 in three 30 credit units in final year, you would calculate the average grade as follows: (30/90 x 68) + (30/90 x 72) + (30/90 x 79) = 73. Your final degree would be 73, which is a first class.

Between 2010/11 and 2020/21, the number of students graduating with first class honours has more than doubled, from 15.7% to 37.9% of graduates.

Is a 2.8 GPA Good? Because a 2.8 is two-tenths of a point from a B average, a 2.8 GPA indicates several above-average grades and that your performance on homework and exams was up to par. With a 2.8 GPA, several colleges will consider your application, so you have a decent number of options to choose from.

For example, for undergraduate degrees, a student would be considered for a 1st class degree classification if their final credit-weighted stage mean mark fell between 67% and 69.49% (above 69.5% a student would automatically be awarded a 1st class degree).

Classification is determined by how consistently you display the necessary standard of skills and understanding, and so the final programme mark reflects your average attainment across your programme of study (except for the first year).

If you're aiming for a first class degree, you have to be prepared to put in maximum effort. Students who achieve a first class honours degree tend to be those who consistently try their hardest throughout the year. It's usually not good enough to get the occasional top grade to pull up a few bare-minimum passes.
