Imagine a young hockey player, Beckett Sennecke, stepping onto the ice for his very first NHL game in Canada. Little did he know, this game would become an unforgettable milestone in his career.
The Toronto native, just 19 years old, delivered a stunning performance as the Anaheim Ducks secured their seventh consecutive win. In a thrilling comeback victory over the Calgary Flames, Sennecke scored his first hat trick, capping it off with an overtime goal that sealed the deal.
"It's definitely something I'll remember," Sennecke said, reflecting on his remarkable achievement. And remember it he will, as he leads all rookies in goals with an impressive 18, surpassing Montreal's Oliver Kapanen.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sennecke's 41 points put him just two behind Ivan Demidov of the Canadiens, who boasts 11 goals and 32 assists. Some might argue that Demidov's well-rounded game gives him an edge, but Sennecke's pure goal-scoring prowess cannot be denied.
Sennecke's hat trick was the third by a teenager in the NHL this season, joining San Jose's Macklin Celebrini, who went first overall in the 2024 NHL draft. Ducks coach Joel Quenneville praised Sennecke's growth throughout the season, highlighting his ability to make high-end plays and his exceptional play recognition.
All three of Sennecke's goals were perfectly placed hard shots, showcasing his exceptional shooting ability. The first two goals, which tied the game at 2-2 in the second period, were the result of slick passing sequences with linemates Mikael Granlund and Alex Killorn. The winning goal, a two-on-one situation, saw Sennecke keep the puck and wire a shot inside the goalpost on Dustin Wolf's glove side.
Quenneville attributed Sennecke's shooting prowess to his patience with the puck, his long reach, and his ability to sustain possession when it seems like he's out of the play.
Lukas Dostal, who faced Sennecke's shots in practice, praised his teammate's impressive hard shot, saying, "For being that young, to have a hard shot like that, it's very impressive." Dostal, who had 32 saves in the game, has also been providing Sennecke with valuable tips, encouraging him to shoot lower, which Sennecke credited for his success that night.
Sennecke's first NHL game in Canada was a showcase of his talent, and with more games north of the border coming up, he's excited to continue his journey. The Ducks' upcoming schedule includes games in Edmonton, Vancouver, and a four-game trip to Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal.
"He's got an extremely bright future," said the Ducks' bench boss. "We'd like to see him continue to improve, which would put us in a really good position."
And improve he has. Reaching the 40-point mark in just 52 games makes Sennecke the third-fastest rookie in franchise history to hit that milestone, following in the footsteps of Bobby Ryan and Trevor Zegras.
On the cusp of his 20th birthday, Sennecke has already made his mark in Ducks history, becoming the fourth rookie to record a hat trick and the second youngest behind Leo Carlsson.
So, what do you think? Is Sennecke's rise to the top a sign of things to come for the Ducks? Or is there more to this story that we're missing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
