NASA is moving forward with a potential Artemis 2 launch in March, but with some important caveats. The space agency is optimistic after a recent wet dress rehearsal, which involved replacing two seals around fueling lines on the mobile launcher.
The Artemis team encountered a new issue during a 'confidence test' on February 12th. Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, Artemis launch director, explained that a filter on the mobile launcher experienced an unexpected delta p, leading to a potential clog or freeze. After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the filter was not clogged, but rather, air had entered the system and froze during operations. The issue was resolved by replacing the filter and conducting further purges.
Despite this challenge, NASA's acting associate administrator, Lori Glaze, remains confident. She stated that the SLS rocket was successfully fueled within the planned timeline and demonstrated crew module close-out activities and a launch countdown. Glaze emphasized that while they are targeting March 6th as the earliest launch attempt, there are still pending tasks, including pad preparations, data review, and a multi-day flight readiness review.
John Honeycutt, chair of the Artemis II Mission Management Team, expressed high confidence in the current configuration, which will remain at the pad until the launch. He mentioned that only minor influences can alter the current setup.
The launch opportunity on March 6th, 2026, offers a 120-minute window starting at 8:29 p.m. EST. However, other launch windows in March are available on the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th. The crew will undergo a soft quarantine at the Johnson Space Center in Houston and later move to the Kennedy Space Center as the launch date approaches.
Despite the potential launch on March 6th, NASA has planned one more pad close-out demonstration, indicating that the final decision will be made closer to the launch date. This cautious approach ensures a thorough evaluation of all systems before the critical mission.
