Alabama jumps Notre Dame in final CFP rankings: What it means for the playoff race (2025)

The College Football Playoff picture is heating up, and the latest rankings have sparked a flurry of debate! Alabama has leapfrogged Notre Dame, moving up to No. 9 in the final weekly rankings, while Notre Dame slipped to No. 10. This shift comes after Alabama's hard-fought victory in the Iron Bowl against Auburn, contrasting with Notre Dame's road win over Stanford. But here's where it gets controversial... BYU, despite finishing its regular season with an impressive 11-1 record, remains at No. 11. The selection committee is clearly facing some tough decisions!

CFP selection committee chairman Hunter Yurachek highlighted the intense discussions surrounding Alabama and Notre Dame, emphasizing how closely the teams have been matched over the past few weeks. He pointed to Alabama's strong performance, especially in the first half of the Iron Bowl, and a crucial fourth-down conversion as key factors influencing the committee's decision.

This change puts Alabama in a precarious position as a potential second-to-last at-large team in the 12-team playoff. However, a win against Georgia in the SEC championship game could secure their spot. Yurachek stated that Alabama is in a solid position and has an opportunity to solidify their ranking.

If Alabama loses to Georgia, they'll likely drop in the rankings. BYU could also shake things up by winning the Big 12 title game, potentially pushing another at-large team out of the field. The committee plans to evaluate the results of all championship games before making their final decisions.

Under the current scenario, Alabama would face No. 8 Oklahoma in a first-round playoff game, with the winner taking on No. 1 Ohio State in a quarterfinal bowl game.

The new seeding process: The CFP has tweaked its seeding process this year, meaning the top four conference champions aren't guaranteed top-four seeds and first-round byes. Instead, the committee will award playoff spots to the top five conference champions, but the top four seeds will be the top four teams in the rankings.
