The meaning of the Sanskrit word "mantra" is traditionally defined as that which liberates the mind from its troubles and limitations. A mantra is a sound, syllable, word, or group of words that are considered capable of “creating transformation”, spiritual transformation.

The prayerful dimension of the traditional mantras listed below is the vital source of its “shakti”, its power. A mantra’s effect is based on its sound and therefore an attempt should be made to learn and chant them correctly. Hence, below you will find different mantras along with their meanings and Sanskrit audio pronunciation.

Please also note that Sh̅nti mantras always end with three utterances of the word "sh̅nti" which can be referred to as "peace". The reason for saying sh̅nti three times is for calming and removing obstacles in the three realms namely physical (people, places and situations), divine (from nature - storms, droughts etc.), and from the internal realm (from within one’s own body and mind - pain, diseases, laziness and stress).

Yoga Mantras can help you with your own spiritual growth, and that in turn, can guide you to raise awareness levels of students in your yoga and meditation classes so that they can take informed decisions in their daily lives - whether it is making food choices or selecting an activity. From the below yoga mantras, you can also get inspiration for setting intentions for your yoga classes.

This mantra is usually chanted during meditation practices to allow the mind to stay focussed and to slowly help the practitioner to reach their inner self and move towards a state of bliss and self-realization.

The Om Namah Shivay mantra has five syllables (na, mah, shi, va, ya) and hence is also known as Panchakshara Mantra (Panch meaning five and akshar meaning syllable). The five syllables represent the five states of Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.

Om is said to be the sacred primordial sound which means the self or self reflection or the mind. The five syllables or vowels being the seed chants of the five elements mean that we are working through the process of creation in reverse order leading us back to the source from which the manifestation arose. Thus it is believed that chanting this mantra relieves the mind of Tamasic state (Ignorance) and Rajasic state (Passion) and slowly leads the practitioner to a state of enlightenment.
