Jeremy Saulnier was an exciting new filmmaker who burst onto the screen with a pair of brutal and stylish thrillers in Blue Ruin and Green Room. While his follow-up film Hold the Dark was not met with quite the same enthusiasm as his other movies, there was still a lot of excitement about what his next project would be. After a long wait, Saulnier returns with the new Netflix thriller Rebel Ridge, which continues to solidify him as a voice in modern cinema worth paying attention to.
The movie serves as a bit of an updated reimagining of the John Rambo story First Blood. Aaron Pierre stars as a former Marine who is traveling through a small American town when he is harassed by corrupt police officers. When his attempts to bring justice to the offenders fall on deaf ears, he decides to take matters into his own hands, waging war on them and making them realize they picked the wrong man to mess with.
Pierre delivers a star-making turn as the determined and relentless complex hero. There is an intimidating intensity, but Pierre never loses touch of the character’s humanity. Don Johnson also gets a standout role as the sheriff of the police department who refuses to hold his men accountable but finds that they are now outmatched. Saulnier clearly has a love for hard-hitting and brutal stories and any fans of his past movies should make Rebel Ridge a must-see.

A Quiet Place: Day One is a spin-off of the A Quiet Place franchise conceived by John Krasinski. The film is set at the beginning of the invasion as humanity scrambles to survive, before the events of the original film, with Lupita Nyong'O leading the cast, directed by Michael Sarnoski.

The A Quiet Place franchise expanded into its first spinoff movie with A Quiet Place: Day One, taking the audience back to the initial invasion. These aliens who hunt based on sound add to the tension and terror of these movies and that is only elevated in this new approach to the story. Instead of once again following the Abbott family in their rural fight for survival, the movie stars Lupita Nyong'o as a woman on her own mission when New York City is thrown into chaos.
The big-city setting of the movie immediately puts the audience on edge as they know to fear even the slightest sound in these movies. The movie adds to the mythology of the franchise with some more revelations about the aliens, but wisely still makes it about the grounded characters. Nyong'o gives a powerful performance and Joseph Quinn is excellent as a fellow survivor who she meets along the way.

The Fall Guy is an action thriller from Bullet Train and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch. Ryan Gosling stars as a stuntman who is forced to find a missing movie star, investigate a conspiracy, and repair his relationship with the love of his life. The film was written by Drew Pearce and inspired by the 1980s TV series of the same name.

One of the most entertaining movies of the summer is now available for streaming. The Fall Guy is a popcorn movie update to the classic action series of the 1980s that starred Lee Majors. Ryan Gosling steps into the lead role of Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman who gets out of the business after an accident. However, when his former girlfriend (Emily Blunt) finds her directorial debut in trouble, Colt returns to help track down a missing movie star.
From stuntman-turned-director David Leitch, The Fall Guy is a wonderful love letter to the stunt community in filmmaking. However, while the movie is a fun action-comedy with some fantastic set pieces, it is also a charming rom-com with Gosling and Blunt sharing terrific chemistry together. All the various tones blend together in a thoroughly enjoyable ride from beginning to end.

Kinds of Kindness is a 2024 comedy-drama film by writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos. Split across segments, Kinds of Kindness tells the stories of a man trying to reclaim his destiny, a police officer whose wife returns after being lost at sea only to seem like a different person, and a woman tasked with finding a future spiritual leader.

- Runtime

After teaming on the Oscar-winning Poor Things, Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos quickly teamed again for the third time in the dark anthology comedy Kinds of Kindness. The movie stars Stone along with the likes of Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Hong Chau, and Margaret Qualley, with each actor playing a different character in three separate stories. They range from a tale of a man whose life is controlled by his boss, a woman who returns after being lost at sea, and a cult trying to find the secret of resurrection.
As with many of Lanthimos' movies, Kinds of Kindness is quirky, strange, and bold in its unique vision, not at all concerned that it is a movie that won't be for everyone. However, there is an excitement to seeing the filmmaker telling these smaller stories, giving three wonderful glimpses of his distinct voice. It also helps that he is working with an exceptional cast, with Stone and Plemons especially impressive.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is a Western film directed by Kevin Costner, and sees him in the starring role. The film explores multiple generations surrounding the expansion of the American West before and after the Civil War. Horizon is the first in a series of four films, all of which were greenlit by Warner Bros. Pictures.

- Runtime
- 181 Minutes
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 was one of the most talked-about movies of the year before it was even released. This was the film that Kevin Costner famously chose to make rather than return to his beloved role as John Dutton on Yellowstone. It is an epic passion project for Costner and his return to the director's chair as well as the Western genre following other acclaimed projects like Dances with Wolves and Open Range.
The movie is an expansive look at the 15 years of America before and after the Civil War. Costner stars in the film with a cast that also includes Sienna Miller, Luke Wilson, Sam Worthington, Michael Rooker, and others. Unfortunately, much of the talk has been about its poor box office performance and Costner's personal funding for the project. However, while people might not have shown up to the theaters, it is likely Horizon will find more of an audience on streaming, perhaps giving the upcoming Horizon Part 2 a better chance.

Based on a true story, Ordinary Angels is a drama starring Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson. Swank plays a character named Sharon, a Kentucky-based hairdresser who tries to help a widower (Ritchson) as he struggles to provide for his two daughters. When Sharon discovers one of his daughters needs a liver transplant, Sharon moves mountains to help.

Those looking for a feel-good story to stream this week will be in luck with Ordinary Angels coming to Starz. Two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank stars in the movie as a hairdresser aimlessly going through life when she seemingly finds her purpose when she comes across a story of a widowed father (Alan Ritchson) attempting to care for his sick daughter. Swank's unsuspecting hero not only gives what she can to the struggling family but begins rallying the entire community behind them.
The movie is based on a true story about events that took place in 1994, making it an even more heartwarming tale of the kindness of strangers and the strength of a community working together. It has been a while since Swank led a high-profile film like this and she shines as the charismatic hero of the story. While Ritchson has become popular for his larger-than-life role on Reacher, it is also nice to see him in a more grounded role here as well. The movie might not break any new ground, but Ordinary Angels is a touching drama.

George Miller continues to prove himself one of the most visionary action directors of all time while also proving that his Mad Max franchise can still provide thrills decades after it started. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the first spinoff entry in the Mad Max franchise, following the character of Furiosa, introduced in Mad Max: Fury Road as played by Charlize Theron. This prequel movie finds Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role as the young girl who was taken from her home and raised as a child by a reckless and sadistic warlord (Chris Hemsworth).
Mad Max: Fury Road is regarded by many as one of the best action movies of the 21st century and Furiosa does justice to those looking for the same kind of relentless, wild, and chaotic action sequences. Miller stages incredible sequences, such as the opening act, which feels like an extended chase scene, and the amazing convoy ambush. Taylor-Joy commands the screen in the warrior role while Hemsworth gives one of the best performances of his career, having a lot of fun with the villain role.

Mark Wahlberg has built a solid relationship with Netflix over the past several years, with thrillers like Spenser Confidential and comedies like Me Time. His latest collaboration with the streamer comes with The Union, which has the added thrill of partnering Wahlberg with another A-lister, Halle Berry. In the movie, Wahlberg plays a mild-mannered guy who reconnects with his old high school sweetheart (Berry) only to discover that she is an international spy who needs his help to save the day.
With Wahlberg usually playing the confident action hero, it is fun to see him more as the man out of his element while also playing into his comedic skills which he has proven time and time again. Perhaps even more exciting is seeing Berry back in an action role, showing off the amazing star power that has been too absent from mainstream movies in recent years.

Set several years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the next installment in the Apes saga. Ape clans have taken up residence in the oasis that Caesar sought to colonize, but humans have reverted to their animalistic nature in their absence. Now battling between enslavement and freedom, outliers in the Ape clans will take sides in a newly burgeoning society.

- Release Date
- May 10, 2024
- Cast

- Runtime
- 145 Minutes
The Planet of the Apes franchise has been around since 1968 and 2024's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes proves it is still an exciting and versatile story. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues the story created by the Planet of the Apes prequels, which focused on Caesar leading the apes to become the dominant species on the planet. However, this is the start of a new saga in that story, set generations after Caesar's time and taking a look at the world he helped create.
The movie focuses on a young ape named Noa who lives in a small community of apes who are attacked by a more powerful tribe, under the command of a ruthless ruler. Noa sets out on a journey to rescue his people while also encountering a human who reveals secrets about the existence of her people. The movie is an exciting summer blockbuster but also a thoughtful adventure movie that grows on the story of this franchise in interesting and exciting ways.
